According to the US government, Americans use between 29 and 37 thousand gallons of water per person per year. And globally, 1 in 9 people lack access to clean water. According to Water.org, that means that in the world, 2½ times the population of the United States is lacking access to clean water.
The loss of water through leaking supply pipes accounts for up to half of treated potable water vanishing before it can be consumed. This loss is called Non-Revenue Water (NRW). That is to say that the water that leaks out of the supply pipes prior to getting meter is water for which no revenue can be generated. This loss of treated water increases the cost of delivering clean potable water to residential homes. For those lacking access to clean water, this high loss rate and increased cost of delivery puts water further out of their grasp than necessary.
